At Libertyville Dental Associates, led by the highly experienced Dr. Sam Weisz, we take pride in helping our patients achieve lasting oral health and beautiful smiles. Based in Libertyville, Illinois, our practice combines advanced technology with personalized care to address various dental needs. One procedure we often discuss with patients is root canal therapy, a treatment designed to save a damaged or infected tooth.
Many patients wonder about the timing of a root canal. Acting at the right time can prevent complications and ensure the procedure’s success. Below are five common questions about when you should consider getting a root canal.
If your dentist recommends a root canal, promptly acting is crucial. Delaying the procedure can allow the infection to spread, potentially leading to increased pain, swelling, and even tooth loss. While mild symptoms may seem manageable at first, postponing treatment could necessitate more invasive procedures later, such as an extraction or dental implant placement.
Root canal therapy can be performed shortly after your diagnosis. Your dentist will assess the severity of the infection and ensure that your gums and surrounding tissue are stable enough for the treatment. Early intervention often results in less discomfort, quicker recovery, and better long-term outcomes.
Waiting for severe symptoms to appear before addressing the issue is not advisable. A mild toothache or sensitivity might indicate an underlying infection that won’t resolve. As the condition worsens, the pain can become unbearable, and the risk of losing the tooth increases. Contact your dentist immediately if you notice persistent discomfort, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling around a tooth.
In rare cases, your dentist may recommend temporarily delaying a root canal. This could happen if you have an active infection that requires antibiotics first or if swelling makes the procedure more complicated. Once the area is stabilized, the root canal can proceed. Be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions closely to avoid further complications.
Many root canals can be completed in a single appointment lasting 60 to 90 minutes. However, your dentist may schedule a second visit if the infection is severe or the tooth requires additional cleaning. Discussing the treatment timeline with your dentist during your consultation will give you a clear understanding of what to expect.
